چکیده

Evidence-Based Answer The overall risk of MI and ischemic stroke is increased in women who use combined oral contraceptives. The relative risk of MI and ischemic stroke increases as estrogen dose rises, increasing by 60% with doses of 20 mcg and more than doubling when doses of 50 mcg or more are used. Risk of MI and ischemic stroke does not vary with the type or generation of progestin. Physicians should be cautious when prescribing combined oral contraceptives because of the increased risk of MI and ischemic stroke.1 (Strength of Recommendation: B, based on limited-quality evidence from observational studies.)

Risk of Arterial Thrombosis in Relation to Oral Contraceptives (RATIO) study: oral contraceptives and the risk of ischemic stroke.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Epidemiological studies have shown an increased risk of venous thrombosis in women taking third-generation oral contraceptives, ie, those containing the progestogens desogestrel or gestodene. This study assesses the risk of ischemic stroke with several types of oral contraceptives. METHODS A multicenter, population-based, case-control study was performed in 9 Dutch cent...

Evaluation of transesophageal echocardiography in detecting cardiac sources of emboli in ischemic stroke patients

Background: Embolus is one of the causes of ischemic stroke that can be due to cardiac sources such as valvular heart diseases and atrial fibrillation and atheroma of the aorta. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is superior in identifying potential cardiac sources of emboli. Due to insufficient data on TEE findings in ischemic stroke in Iran, the present study was done to evaluate TEE in...

Prothrombotic conditions, oral contraceptives, and the risk of ischemic stroke.

BACKGROUND The role of inherited prothrombotic conditions, including factor V Leiden (FV G1691A), prothrombin G20210A, and the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T genotype, in the pathogenesis of ischemic stroke is not well established. The effects of these factors may be potentiated by the use of oral contraceptives, analogous to observations in venous thrombosis. METHODS Patie...
